About Black and White Image Converter
There is more than one way to remove color, and the difference is visible. Luminance weights green most heavily because the human eye is most sensitive to it, which is why a red apple and a green leaf of the same brightness end up different grays — as they should. A simple average treats all three channels equally and produces flatter, muddier results.
How to use it
- Choose an image, or drag one onto the drop zone.
- Set method, threshold and contrast.
- Check the preview, then download. Your original file is never modified.

Questions
Which method should I use?
Luminance, almost always — it matches how your eye perceives brightness. Reach for a single channel when you want a specific effect: the red channel gives skin a smooth, classic look, the blue channel makes skies dramatic and skin blotchy.
What is the threshold option for?
It throws away every shade of gray and gives you pure black and white — one bit per pixel. That is what you want for scanned line art, signatures, stencils and logos destined for vinyl cutting or screen printing.
Can I turn a black and white photo back to color here?
No. Removing color discards the information permanently — there is nothing left to reverse. Colorising an old photo requires an AI model that guesses plausible colors; it is a different job entirely.
Why does my grayscale image still have a color cast?
It probably has an embedded color profile, or you are viewing it on a screen with a strong white point. The pixel values here are truly neutral: red, green and blue are set to the same number.
