About NATO Phonetic Alphabet
Alfa, Bravo, Charlie — formally the ICAO spelling alphabet, adopted in 1956 after years of testing to find words that stay distinct over a noisy radio link and across accents. Two spellings are deliberately non-standard: Alfa and Juliett. The `ph` in Alpha and a single `t` in Juliet are misread by speakers of several languages, so the official spellings differ from the English words.

Questions
Why is it spelled "Alfa" and not "Alpha"?
Because "ph" is not pronounced as "f" in many languages, and the alphabet had to work internationally. Juliett gets a second "t" so French speakers do not treat the final "t" as silent.
How are numbers pronounced?
Nine is "niner" to distinguish it from the German "nein", three is "tree", and four is "fower" — all chosen to survive a bad connection.
