About Em Dash Remover

The em dash (—) became the most recognizable fingerprint of generated text, and the reason is frequency rather than novelty. Writers have always used it; chat models use it several times more often, and cluster it in the same places — mid-sentence asides, dramatic pauses, and the "not just X — it's Y" construction. Swapping them for commas or periods changes how a passage reads in about a second, which is why this is the single most requested edit on AI output.

How to use it

  1. Paste the text you want to run through em dash remover.
  2. Set replace em dashes with, also convert en dashes (–) and also straighten curly quotes and the remaining options.

Questions

Does removing em dashes make text undetectable?

No, and nothing does. Reliable AI detection does not exist — OpenAI withdrew its own classifier in 2023 for low accuracy, and studies since have found high false-positive rates. What removing them changes is how the text reads to a person, which is usually the actual goal.

Should I use a comma or a period?

A comma when the aside belongs to the sentence, a period when it is really a second thought that got attached. Read the result: if a comma leaves a sentence that runs on for three clauses, it wanted to be two sentences.

What is the difference between an em dash, an en dash and a hyphen?

An em dash (—) sets off a clause. An en dash (–) joins a range, as in 1939–45. A hyphen (-) joins words, as in well-known. The three are separate characters, and the en dash option here converts ranges to hyphens rather than commas, because "1939, 45" is nonsense.

Why does the parentheses option only sometimes apply?

Because a parenthetical needs two dashes around it. A single em dash in a sentence is not enclosing anything, so it falls back to your main choice — turning it into a lone bracket would produce broken punctuation.
